Former National Chairman, Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC), and the Director General, National Taskforce to Combat Illegal Importation of Small Arms, Ammunitions, Light Weapons, Chemical Weapons and Pipelines Vandaism (NATFORCE), Chief Emmanuel Okereke, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to listen to the demands of Nigerians on timely appointment of his cabinet and those he should consider for appointment.
Okereke stated this Friday during an interactive session with journalists on the president’s delay in appointment of cabinet members which has given room for speculation and a recent protest by a civil society group in Abuja.
He called on the federal government not to treat the demand for immediate formation of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) with levity, noting that the sooner the president sets up his team the better for Nigeria.
Okereke explained that protest is one of the legal means through which government could be made to act, as long as such was done within the ambit of the law.
“President Muhammadu Buhari should listen attentively to the yearning of Nigerians who voted him into office. Nigerians want nothing but good governance that would mitigate all the social and infrastructural decay in the system which has given rise to insecurity, banditry, kidnapping among others,” he said.
The former presidential candidate on the platform of the African Liberation Party (ALP) urged Buhari to ensure credible and quality Nigerians are appointed into his cabinet to enable him deliver on his campaign promises.
He said the fact that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are totally in charge of both the executive and legislative arms of government gives the president enabling environment to deliver on his electoral promises.
Speaking on the NATFORCE Bill, the DG said: “Our Bill is for an Act to provide for the Establishment of the National Commission for the Prohibition of Illegal Importation of Small Arms, Ammunitions and Light Weapons.
“The commission will be charged with the responsibility to regulate and prohibit proliferation of Small Arms, ammunitions and light weapons and for other related matters.”
While stating that the bill was pending at the National Assembly, he expressed optimism that with the proclamation of the 9th NASS, the passage of the bill would be expedited to ensure that unscrupulous people and illicit businessmen do not continue to bring in Illegal fire arms and ammunitions into the country.
