A retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Hashim S. Argungu, has called for the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in police investigations.
Argungu made the call yesterday in Abuja during the second phase of a capacity building workshop tagged: “Training the Trainer.”
The workshop was organised for the Nigeria Police legal officers/prosecutors and investigators by the Force in collaboration with Bastion Chambers.
While emphasising the need for training, Argungu said there was need for efficient and quality policing in the country.
“We need to equip the capacity of officers so as to enable them combat the current security challenges using ICT.
“The Nigerian Police Force should determine the standards of knowledge and skills to be attained by officers being posted to each departments, section, units and formations of the Nigerian police and make computer and ICT knowledge a priority.
“Only trained and qualified officers should be posted to relevant departments, formations, units and sections,” he said.
He also said special priority should be given to officers with computer/ICT education due to the globalisation, computerisation systems and process for intra and inter-connectivity within the departments.
Also speaking, the Co-ordinator of the workshop, Barr. Muhammed Kudu Nakodi, said the training “which is on administration of criminal justice act is an innovation that will ease criminal dispensation of justice.”
“Most police cases end up in magistrate court, but with this training, they can go to High Court and Court of Appeal. The programme is done in phases to accommodate officers from all parts of the country,” he said.
It would be recalled that the IGP, Ibrahim Kpotun Idris, on assumption of office more than a year ago, made training and development one of the cardinal objectives of his administration.
