It will be moment of glitz, glamour and comprehensive excitement tomorrow when the current Administration of Federal Capital Territory (FCTA) host Athletes and officials that represented the nation’s capital at the 2017 National Youth Games held in Ilorin.
The programme scheduled for prestigious International Conference Centre would staged later in the evening with FCT Minister, Muhammad Musa Bello and Permanent Secretary, Mr Christian Oha confirmed to personally reward athletes, officials and many others who have contributed immensely to the development of sports within the Federal Capital Territory
The FCT contingent who returned to Abuja with 14 medals comprising four gold, three silver and seven bronze medals and their athletes were adjudged youngest team at the games with many athletes within the range of 8 and 12 years old.
Giving details of the upcoming reception, Director, FCT Sports Council, Chief (Mrs) Dilichukwu Onyedinma explained that the current administration which is placing much emphasis on youth and sports development as part of human capacity building.
She however recalled with nostalgia how Team FCT after participating in few sporting event were those that finished on top.
“The journey was not easy. We trained hard as much as possible to bring under-17 athletes that were needed for the game. FCT was seen as youngest team children and were able to do FCT proud. From what they did, we were able to come back with many medals. We brought back laurel to FCT.
“In addition to that, five of our girls won scholarship from the game. So it’s was a very big achievement and we have the youngest players especially our players in Chess and Gymnastics and as Young as they were, they were able to win medals. So, the story came back and our minister, who is youth friendly and understands the role of sports development in every young Nigerian, was happy with our achievements.
“The Minister understood that these children need sports kits including canvass, the skin guard and other materials that can help them pursue their carrier. They will also be given cash rewards among other incentives.” She concluded
