Expensive, Yar’Adua visits Nasarawa IDP camp

Veteran radio presenter and Head of Broadcast Wazobia FM, Nigeria Info FM and Cool FM, Mr Expensive James, Sunday, led a delegation of staffers of Wazobia FM and well-meaning Nigerians to visit the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Gurku, Nasarawa state.

Among the dignitaries in his entourage was Zainab Umar Yar’Adua, wife of late Nigerian President, Umar Musa Yar’Adua, who came with her children and grandchildren, bearing food items and clothes of different makes for children and widows in the IDP camp.

Addressing newsmen during the event, Mr Expensive expressed displeasure over the abandonment of the IDPs by government, especially the bad road leading to the camp.

He said he had been visiting orphanages in different parts of Abuja, but was moved to visit the out-of-place IDP camp on the request of Mrs Yar’Adua, even as he implored government to, as a matter of urgency, come to the aid of the IDPs.

He said: “I have been visiting the less privileged in different parts of Abuja, as it is part of me to render assistance to people whenever I can, especially with my NGO, Help One Foundation. However, I have never seen anything like this before. The people in this IDP camp seem not to be part of society. They are suffering. They have been abandoned by government, for something that is not of their own making.

“Look at the road leading to the camp, it is kilometers away from Mararaba, not tarred and only God knows how the people will be faring in the rainy season, if getting here in the dry season can be this nightmarish. Government should, as a matter of urgency, intervene in the plight of the IDPs, who were chased away from their homes in Borno and other parts of the Northeast by Boko Haram insurgents. The IDPs are human beings like you and I and they deserve better.”

Also speaking, Mrs Yar’Adua said that she was moved to tears when she learnt about the IDP camp, hence her inviting Mr Expensive and other well meaning Nigerians to visit the camp.

“IDPs are not different from you and I. They are just people who are unfortunate to find themselves living in subhuman conditions due to terrorists’ attacks on their homelands, so they deserve better from government and Nigerians,” she said.
