Expert harps on ICT knowledge for girls, youngsters

The Initiative for Peace and Women’s Right in Africa (IPWR), a non-governmental organisation, has emphasised the need for more girls’ enrollment into science subjects.

The NGO faulted the long practiced stereotypes on girls’ capability to study any subject or choice careers.

It’s founder, Mrs. Edidiong Idang, stated this weekend at a one-day capacity building program for young girls between the ages of 10 to 15 tagged “ICT 101 for youngsters” convened in Abuja by the organisation to mark Children’s Day celebration.

Idang said the programme was designed to equip young girls with relevant skills in the tech industry and calling on the government and other relevant authorities to ensure that teachers are well trained and equipped to impact knowledge, counsel and guide young girls to choice of subjects and careers.

She said the knowledge of ICT will help the youngsters in their school projects, adding that the world has gone global and digital with everything which used to be done manually now digital.

“Things have moved from analog to digital and the more we expose our young girls who are often times seen as people who don’t have flares, or the fact that the ICT world is male dominated but we want girls to know more because there is no limit of education a girl child should have .

“Knowledge of ICT will help the youngsters in their school projects and so they don’t have to struggle before opening the system, do their basic programming and even know how computers network so they can share knowledge with others.

“The education curriculum is still male dominated, but we want the girls to take interest so that when they go back to school, they will not shy away from subjects such as physics , chemistry, mathematics which involves calculation because ICT will teach the kids easier ways to solve problems,” she added
