Expert unveils remedy for prostate cancer in Benin

Hope has risen for prostate cancer patients as over 10 persons have benefited from new discoveries and tested ‘Brachytherapy (implant) treatment for the ailment.

A medical consultant and radiation oncologist, Dr. Oludare Folajimi Adeyemi, disclosed the remarkable breakthrough to journalists after performing another treatment on a prostate cancer patient at the LA oncology clinic in the Benin-City, Edo state capital.

Adeyemi said prostrate brachytherapy is a unique form of treating the disease, adding that the discovery is affordable and less time consuming.

He said: “The beauty of brachytherapy treatment method is that, it is done one time and between two to three hours, you are done and the patient can go home.”

“Although, there are other options of treating prostate cancer, but the brachytherapy  method is very unique, accurate and it offers high degree of curememt to the patient with prostate cancer, especially when it is done at the early stage of the disease.

“In this discovery of mine, what we do is to implant a radioactive inside the prostrate and right inside the prostrate.

“It begin to release radiations which ended up killing the cells. It damages what we call DNA and when DNA is damaged, the cells cannot actually produce any longer”.

The 2nd Vice president Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Ofene Enang, commended Dr. Adeyemi for the breakthrough.

He  said, “the association will continue to encourage Medicare especially when it is private initiative.”

Enang disclosed that the NMA is at the forefront of canvassing for reversal of medical tourism in the country.
