Expose randy lecturers, NUC tells VCs

National Universities Commission (NUC) has frowned at the escalating rates of sexual harassment among students and university teachers in the country.
Executive Secretary of the Commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, expressed the dissatisfaction recently in a keynote address presented at the 33rd annual lecture of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun state.
Rasheed, therefore, called on vice-chancellors to punish any lecturer or student, who had been indicted for perpetrating the immoral act, adding that such cases should not swept under carpets.
The executive secretary also warned that names of offenders should be widely publicised in the national dailies to serve as deterrent to others.
“Whenever you punish or sanction somebody in this regard, let your efforts be duly publicised.
Let the world know that somebody has lost his or job because of sexual harassment or somebody has been demoted from being a professor to lecturer because of sexually harassing a student.
We in the Commission would be helping you”, he said.
Rasheed said sexual harassment had become a major challenge to the university system, stressing that the reform drives were focus at addressing the stemming rate of corruption in the system.
“Our major crisis now is sexual harassment whether we like it or not, I want to charge the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU) to take a decisive action on this challenge.
“Universities must be assisted to get rid of these bad elements in the system and expose them to the world”, he added, assuring that the effort would yield the desired result of sanitising the system.
The ES disclosed that the lecturers, who were supposed to be role model of students, took advantage of girls and boys because they have the power to award marks, stating that there was the need to fight them to a standstill before they could bastardise the university system
