Yusuf stated this recently at a workshop organised by Heinrich Boll Stiftung Nigeria in Abuja tagged: “Value from waste: Stakeholder engagement on lead – acid battery waste in Nigeria.
He said these have also cause environmental effect to the young children who are exposing to lead Acid.
He added: “These can affect their cognitive development and the harmful substances infiltrate the soil and water bodies through landfills that negatively affects the ecosystem as it poses various dangers to plants (vegetables, fruits etc.) grazing animals.

“Lead Acid Battery contains large amounts of lead and sulfuric acid that are not only corrosive but toxic to health particularly in young children. It adversely impacts on the environment,” he explained.
Director Inspection and Enforcement Department of (NESREA) Miranda .A.Amachree said that, “the number of chemicals contained in batteries vary with the type and some of the chemicals include cadmium lead mercury nickel, lithium and electrolytes. When disposed alongside household trash, batteries end in landfills and waste dumps.”
Amachree said that, “lead particulate and Acid also contaminate the soil and become airborne when dry and lithium in batteries can explode under certain condition e.g. cell-phones it cause fires at dumpsites and landfills which releases toxic chemicals into the air.”
