Plateau state deputy governor, Professor SonniTyoden, has advised theDirector General, National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Professor Abubakar Sulaiman to extend the Institute’s services to states.
The deputy governor said this during a courtesy visit to ProfessorAbubakar in Abuja weekend.
Professor Tyoden, whodiscussed several cooperation matters and ways to strengthen democratic institutions across the states of the federation, stated that thelevel of visibility the institute has enjoyed within the 100 days the DG has spent in office is impressive and expressed his desire to see NILDS’ services extended to the states as well.
He congratulated the director general on repositioning the institute to boost capacity of the legislature and deepen democracy across the country.
On the occasion, views were exchanged about the role of the institute in advancing democracy in the country, prospects for further cooperation with state legislatures and state governments as a whole.
While thanking the deputy governor for his visit, Professor Abubakar assured that the impact of NILDS will not only be felt at the national level, but efforts were ongoing to ensure that all the states benefit from the services of the institute.
“NILDS has been a vanguard for strengthening democratic processes, structures and institutions in Nigeria and the African region; the Institute has been successful in improving the technical capacity of legislators and legislative support staff in various aspects of legislative practice and procedure,” Abubakar said.
