Ezenwa to captain Eagles for CHAN qualifi ers’

High riding-FC IfeanyiUbah goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa has been named skipper of the CHAN Eagles ahead of next month’s qualifi ers against Benin Republic. Head Coach of the team, Salifu Yussuf made the choice of Ezenwa and it was announced through the Super Eagles Twitter handle yesterday after the morning training session at the Sani Abacha stadium, Kano. Ezenwa has been understudy Super Eagles fi rstchoice goalkeepers for some years now. He was top choice at last year’s CHAN in Rwanda,

where Nigeria failed to go past the fi rst round. Th e former Flying Eagles shot stopper takes over from Enyimba defender Chima Akas, who led the home-based national team last year. Akas will now be assistant captain. Nigeria will face Benin between August 12 and 18 in a fi nal playoff for next year’s CHAN in Kenya. However, Togo, who lost to Benin in the previous round of the qualifi ers, have petitioned CAF demanding Benin be disqualifi ed over the eligibility of some of the players they lined up in the matches they played.
