Fadama III constructs mini dam, feeder roads in Yobe

Th e Fadama lll Additional Funding ll project in Yobe state has constructed a mini earth dam and feeder roads in Nangere and Potiskum local government areas to boost irrigation farming and facilitate transportation of farm produce from the rural to urban areas. Th e state Project Coordinator, Alhaji Musa Garba, said this while conducting them round at the dam at Gada village yesterday in continuation of its tour, adding that the project was fi nanced by World Bank under the Northeast food security and livelihood programme.

He said the earth dam was constructed to harvest rain waters fl owing downstream of the community for irrigation and fi shing in the area. “Th e project has also constructed a water gate to regulate water fl ow to the farmlands and orchards which is opened when farmers want to water their farms and closed to preserve the water and avoid fl ooding.” Th e coordinator said 21 households under the irrigation programme were supported with water pumps, seeds, sprayers, fertilisers and herbicides.

“Th e project has also supported 16 households on livestock farming with each household provided with a set of four female goats and a male goat or, three sheep and two rams while, three households have been provided with canoes for fi shing,” he said. Th e coordinator said “the programme was aimed at providing the people with sustainable means of livelihood urging the benefi ciaries to take advantage of the support.” Meanwhile, the benefi ciaries have engaged in rice, pepper, tomatoes, onion and okra cultivation.

Awwal Yahaya, a fi sherman and benefi ciary of the initiative, said “the construction of the dam has increased the volume of fi sh and creating more fortune to fi shermen.” “Initially, the fi sh were washed away by the fl oods, but the construction of the mini dam has arrested both the water and the fi sh,” he said. In Dagare community, 40 households were supported with sets of small ruminants of goats or sheep and, food support, including rice, maize and beans.
