Assistant Inspector – General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 1 Kano, Alhaji Tambari Yabo Muhammad, has described the animosity between farmers and Fulani herdsmen being responsible for the tragic loss of lives in Faskari and Sabuwa local government areas of Katsina state.
Speaking on a local radio station in Kano, Muhammad said the volatility of the areas called for concern and decisive action as the arsonists take refuge in the jungle which borders Zamfara, Kaduna and Katsina states, adding that assault on police officers combing the areas had become a recurring decimal.
He said: “From the experience I have gathered as one who had served in Zamfara, and Kaduna states as Police Commissioner, I am not surprised at what had happened. There was a time I assigned my men in Zamfara to go and contain such a crisis, but none of them came back. They were all brutally murdered. Since the jungle is their abode, one has to be fully prepared to confront them.”
On the visit president Goodluck Jonathan paid to Katsina a day to the incident, Muhammad attributed the success of the visit to the adequate precautionary measures taken by the police and other security agencies to face any eventuality and praised the people of the state for their orderly conduct.
He, however, said his experience in Katsina during the president visit had inspired him to organise a sensitisation workshop in the near future aimed at inviting politicians, INEC and other stakeholders to rub minds on how to avert future political crises.
