Father can’t cash in £5,000 in ripped banknotes after son tore them to pieces

Playtime turned into a nightmare when a five-year-old boy shredded £5,500 worth of his dad’s banknotes into tiny little pieces. The father, named only as Mr Gao, said he discovered the scenes upon returning home one day this week, with banknotes strewn across his bed and floor.

Things went from bad to worse for the shocked father, living in Qingdao City in China, when the bank refused to swap the destroyed cash for unspoiled notes. Mr Gao borrowed the 50,000 RMB (£5,583) from creditors for his business, but the bank simply refused to take in and exchange his ‘broken’ money.

The banks told the father he would need to piece and tape the money back together at the very least for an exchange to go ahead. Mr Gao has been spending the past three days puzzling the banknote pieces back together, but will not stop until all 500 notes are fixed. The dad, who never admitted where he kept the money, said: ‘I can’t and won’t blame my son. He’s still young, so he didn’t understand what he was doing.’
