FCC crisis: Agency defends embattled chairman

The Independent News Agency of Nigeria has risen to her defence of the Chairman, Federal Character Commission (FCC), Dr. Muheeba Fraida Dankaka, following a petition to the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offence Commission (ICPC), against him by commissioners representing the 36 states and the FCT.

A statement by Mr Femi Ojo of the Independent News Agency of Nigeria implored Nigerians to disregard the petition as “the stated allegations are fluid, without proof and are at best imaginations of the sponsors of the allegations.”

The statement read in part: “Following series of allegations reportedly championed against the Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Dr. Muheeba Farida Dankaka, by some national commissioners of the commission, the Independent News Agency of Nigeria stepped in and found out that the stated allegations are fluid, without proof and are at best imaginations of the sponsors of the allegations.

“Whereas the office of the Executive Chairman is accused of awarding a media consultancy contract of N35.7M over and above the budgeted limit of N7M, the Chairman, Hon Muheeba Dankaka, challenge her detractors to make public any document of the said contract signed by her. We found out that the said contract was awarded before she came into office.

“We also found out that the names of the commissioners being paraded by the enemies of the federal character commission as signatories to the purported petitions against the chairman were drawn from an attendance list of the commissions meeting. “This list was given to them by the commission’s secretary, who handed over to the most performing embattled Executive chairman as the immediate past acting chairman of the commission.”
