FCT NSCDC to partner lawyers without borders

The commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory Command (FCT) Command, Peter Maigari, has promised to cooperate with Lawyers Without Borders to achieve its primary objective of No Torture and Maltreatment of suspects under custody.

Maigari, who disclosed this when he granted audience to lawyers without borders in his office Thursday, added that one of the core mandates of the Corps “is to maintain law and order.”

According to him, the Corps maintains zero tolerance to torture and maltreatment of suspects under custody.

He said, amongst other responsibilities, the Corps also “maintains 24 hours surveillance of all government infrastructure and sites,” adding that the NSCDC “issues licences to private guards companies and provides regular training and re-training for their employees.”

In her remarks, the spokesperson of the lawyers, Angela Nwosu, said Lawyers Without Borders were seeking partnership with the Corps to ensure that law and order was maintained in that regard, adding that it was unlawful to torture and maltreat suspects.
