Fear grips residents in Awka as another petrol tankers falls in Anambra

Residents of Awka, Anambra state capital, on Saturday, had hectic time as a Tanker conveying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) felled into a ditch opposite St. Patrick’s Cathedral, along Zik’s Avenue.

Zik’s avenue although Enugu/Onistha old road, is a densely populated area with shops, fuel stations, churches, pedestrians and residential areas at both side.

The incident which occurred at about 8.10am, barely two weeks the Anambra state government placed ban driving of heavy duty trucks and tankers on roads in the state, forced traders, residents, passersby and others to scamper for safety.

Confirming the story, the Anambra state police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Haruna Muhammed, said, “The PMS is spilling out and people are scooping the fuel. It is highly advisable you alert residents in the Area through your medium to steer clear from the premises in order to prevent any disaster. 

“Police patrol teams have cordoned off the Area and prevented people from further scooping. Fire Service department was equally contacted to be on standby in order to prevent fire incident.”

Blueprint reports that no casualty was recorded as at the time of filing this  report but the incident forced commuters and passersby to divert to alternative routes leading to Enugu/Onitsha expressways.
