FEC okays N58.49bn for Bida-Nupeko-Pategi road, bridge… works ministry preparing for yuletide – Fashola

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) Wednesday approved N58.49 billion for the construction of Bida-Saachi-Nupeko road and Nupeko-Pategi bridge across the River Niger.

The Minister of  Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, who disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents after the weekly FEC meeting in Abuja, said road and the bridge would link Nupeko in Niger state and Pategi in Kwara state.
He said construction of the road and bridge would “facilitate connectivity from South-west to North-central and north of Nigeria.”

“The contract was awarded in 2013, but was terminated for non-performance and revaluated. It didn’t have a bridge then; we have added a bridge now,” he said.
The minister said the timeline for the construction of the project was 30 months, adding that the ministry had begun preparations for the Christmas and New Year festivities.

“You know we have the ember preparation.  The team has already started work.  We will be working with Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC. We will also be working with our contractors; the plan is that in places where they have not yet constructed, they should make palliatives so that the heavy traffic movement during the end of the year is manageable and will reduce the inconvenience of commuters to the barest minimum,” he said.

He appealed for the understanding of commuters in Nigeria for inconveniences that might result of the ongoing work on the roads.
“The Ideal thing is that you close down the construction site, but we can’t afford to do that,” he said.
