Federal civil servants protest poor welfare, cut in Sallah bonus

Federal civil servants under the aegis of Joint Union Association of Head of Service of the Federation yesterday grounded activities at the federal secretariat during a protest over poor welfare, lack of training and working materials and slash in Sallah bonus, among others.
The joint union is made up of Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), Association of Senior Civil Servants (ASCS) and the Secretaries Union at the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation.
The protest, held at Block A, paralyzed activities at the section of the federal secretariat, housing the office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation.
The workers expressed concern that none of them had trained in the last seven years, and that their Sallah allowance was cut from N25,000 to N15,000, adding that promotion arrears have also not been paid.
President of the Joint Union, Mr. Ikediashi Uzo, said the protest was not preplanned as it broke out after a meeting with the management on Wednesday morning.
“The management, after a second meeting has agreed to meet the request of the staff immediately, hopefully by the end of this week,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary, Common Services Office (CSO), Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF), Afolayan Olaniyi, who addressed the protesting staff, said management had agreed to the terms of the union.
He said they contacted the Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, who was at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting and she agreed to their demands.
He said the Head of Service agreed to address the issues raised by union.
