We need more of our women to participate in public procurement thereby breaking the cultural barriers of disengaging women in economic development of the country, woman activist, Ifeoma Onyebuchi has said.
Mrs Onyebuchi, who is the programme director and convener, Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC), stated this at a one day workshop on women participation in public procurement in Abuja.
She further said “women aren’t disadvantaged but limited, therefore compulsory laws should be made for women to participate on such platforms”.
Ifeoma urged the women in government to push for women involvement in economic growth and development.
Speaking, the representative of FCT Education Resource Centre, Abuja, Charity Ego Madubuko said public procurement is one of the ways for empowering women financially.
“Achieving this goal depends on closing the gap in the procurement sector experienced by Nigerian women. It also depends on opportunities given to women and girls in our societies and economies.
“For any country to achieve sustainable development goal in order to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for everyone, women must and should be allowed to participate and ensure accountability and transparency in open government contract,” she added.
