FG commits $1bn to improve electricity supply

The federal government has committed the sum of 1 billion dollars to electricity generation and distribution to help improve  unsteady supply of electricicity. This in turn will guarantee the supply of gas to effect continuous power transimission and distribution in the country.

Chairman of the board of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) , Alhaji Ibrahim Waziri who disclosed this yesterday said that the fund given to the electricity companies last Friday was to prevent further  power outages in the country is as a result of shortage of gas
Alhaji Ibrahim stated that both Shell and Chevron have problem with their gas production and gas supplied to generation stations has dramatically gone down.

He said currently, TCN transmitted the total capacity of 3, 200 megawatts of  electricity for the whole country from all generation stations as at yesterday morning, noting that there was an earlier improvement to 4,200 megawatts in February which unfortunately fell to 2000 due to inadequate gas supply.
“It is a direct result of that; that is what is happening. As far as Transmission Company is concerned the same lines are there, there are no issues at all. So we are just experiencing this temporary hiccup.”

According to him the temporary hiccups experienced would be rectified in another three or four weeks however warning that the problem would continue to occur due to intermittent blow of gas pipelines or gas wells being affected negatively.
Waziri explained that the job of his company is to transmit from generation to distribution adding that when there is power outage anywhere it could be due to lack of power from the transmission, or power generated cannot reach a particular destination.
He added that there is also the probability of the transmission company having a problem or that some the  transmissions lines are not working or the local distribution is having problem
