FG developing sustainable agric extension service law – Minister

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Muhammad Sabo Nanono, has revealed that the federal government is on the processing of developing Sustainable agricultural extension service policy backed by law.

Nanono stated this on Thursday during the national workshop on revitalisation of the Nigerian National Agricultural Extension System (NAES), with the theme: “Improved Strategies For Research Extension Farmer-Input Linkage Syalstem (REFILS) held at the Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute (ARMTI), Abuja.

The Minister who was represented by the Director of Extension, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Engr. Frank Kudla, said the Research Extension Farmers Inputs Linkage System (REFILS), has remained weak, uncoordinated and poorly funded with low participation by the private sector.  

He said the conventional REFILS orientation inherited from the ADP system needs to be thoroughly interrogated and refined in the light of contemporary reality. 

Nanono added that policies and practices that will limit the dominance of public bureaucracy and drive private sector inclusion are most urgent.
