FG inaugurates NTWG on GAP standard

The federal government has inaugurated a National Technical Working Group (NTWG) for the development of Global Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) Standard in Nigeria.
Speaking with the 61 members working group, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, said it is pertinent to state that all agriculture and food value chain actors need sustainable access to a substantial share of the international market nothing that there are a set of strict standards known as Global GAP standards that must be adhered to.

He said it is imperative that all stakeholders in the sector synergise and work towards adapting the Global GAP standards through the National Technical Working Group, adding that the group has been put together and driven by the private sector to ensure that Nigeria as a country access the international markets optimally.

He explained further that the group which is made up of various umbrella association, should make Nigeria get the same benefits countries like Kenya and Ghana that are enjoying unlimited access to lucrative markets around the world with attendant benefits and Nigeria as the largest economy in Africa cannot be an exception.
“I want to use this forum to appeal to our commodities values chain actors to be honest in their business as it affects health and the economy.
