FG launches alert system for federal fire service

The federal government has deployed a google-based technology, Fire Alert System Application (FASAPP) to reduce the response time to emergency situations by the Federal Fire Service (FFS).
The application which was unveiled by the Minister of Interior, Gen.
Abdulrahman Dambazau at a ceremony yesterday in Abuja would also provide ambulatory services, control the use of fire extinguishers by terrorists in making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), fight drug trafficking as well as proliferation of small arms among other tasks.
The minister who was represented on the occasion by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr MB Umar, added that in a bid to make fire services available to all Nigerians, the federal government had recently begun the establishment of state commands.
“When I assumed office, I said we have to establish fire services in all states as opposed to having the federal fire service only in Abuja and the geopolitical zones.
As a result, government approved the employment of fire service officers.
Sooner than later, the employment process will be completed”, he said.
On his part, Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Engr.
Garba Joseph Anebi said the application would regulate the sale of fire extinguishers by having all vendors registered and closely monitored for quality assurance and tracking for security purposes.
“With SmokeCom, an innovative feature of FasApp, buildings would be registered and fire detectors installed such that when there is a fire outbreak, the fire service and the owner of the building would be automatically alerted”, he said.
According to the CG, the fire alert system application can be downloaded from all “app stores” or by dialling 7373*300#.
By a simple tap on the application, Nigerians can now report fire incidents while the service by the use of google maps would immediately locate the affected area and call back the reporter to ascertain that it was not a false alarm before immediately deploying firemen from the nearest fire station to the scene.
Anebi also hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for his special interest in the development of the Service, saying before the advent of the administration, the federal safety agency had on several occasions resorted to the use of ‘prayer warriors’ to ensure that fire fighting trucks did not break down while on operations.
