The Federal government of Nigeria, through the ministry of Agriculture and Rural development in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment has at the weekend launched the National Agricultural Resilience Framework on climate change.
Addressing participants at the ministerial dialogue on agricultural resilience in Abuja, the minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, said the frame address the issues concerning climate change and its effects on agricultural production and food security in the country.
He said in the face of the changing weather, Nigerian farmers are exposed to significant amount of vulnerability either from extreme of flood or extreme of drought.
Adesina warned that unless poor farmers armed with technology institution and mechanism that reduces their vulnerability, they are going to suffer more from the negative consequences of climate change.
Giving her welcome address, the Minister of State, Mrs Asabe Ahmed said the government is mindful of sustaining the growth in the sector in the face of climate change.
“We are proactively embracing the risk of pro-climate change with this framework under the guidance of this administration. There is no doubt that the framework will have enduring impact on agricultural production in Nigeria, because it provides a clear roadmap for agriculture resilience and offers pertinent quality recommendations that would strength the capacity of small and large scale agriculture producers to increase productivity, grow wealth,” she stated.
Also, the minister of Environment assured that the ministry will do all within it ability to collaborate with Agriculture to ensures food security in the country.
The chairman of the advisory committee on Agricultural Resilience in Nigeria (ACARN), Prof Jimmy Adegoke, urged the government to as a matter of urgency establish at least 15 agro-metrological stations within three months to ensure the effect fight against climate change in the sector.
