FG restates commitment to teachers’ welfare as NTI trains 3,700 teachers


The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has reiterated federal Ggvernment’s determination and commitment to teachers’ welfare and training in the country. 

Speaking while flagging off a capacity building workshop for 3,700 teachers drawn from parts of the country, put together by the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) in Calabar, Cross Rivers state, Adamu, who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Professo Anthony Gozie Anwukah, said that the rot in the education sector requires government intervention through teachers’ training.  

“The decay that pervades the education sector in Nigeria requires urgent intervention from all the three tiers of government to address the situation. Paramount of these interventions is in the area of human capital development of which teacher training and retraining programmes are most central. It is against this backdrop that the federal government is committing huge resources to train and retrain teachers to put them on better pedestal to discharge their responsibilities diligently,” he said. 

The Minister said that education was pivotal in the country’s march towards socio – economic and political emancipation.

He charged all relevant agencies and parastatals under the Federal Ministry of Education to work together as partners to give birth to a new Nigeria, that prides itself in the quality of education of its citizens. 

“I wish to solicit for greater partnership with National Teachers’ Institute, Kaduna, an agency that is chiefly responsible for the training and retraining of teachers for a better Nigeria,” the Minister added. 

Governor of Cross River state, Prof. Benedict Ayade, who served as Chief Host, commended NTI and the training programme.

Ayade, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Tina Banko Agbo, expressed the state government’s determination in upgrading and developing teachers’ capacity.

The NTI Director General and Chief executive,  Prof. Garba Dahuwa Azare, said the Institute would leave no stone unturned to ensure federal government achieve its lofty desire of moving Nigeria forward through the provision of quality teacher education programmes. 

“All indices of economic growth and political independence rest squarely on the quality of education being provided to the citizens of the nation,” he said, while enjoining the participants to strive to derive maximum benefits from the five workshop series the Institute is rolling out this year. He urged participants to be attentive and better prepared to face the task of cascading the training to other colleagues. 

The Chairman NTI Governing Council, Senator Kaka Malam Yale, who was represented by a member of the Council and a director in the federal ministry of education, Abuja, Mr. Jonathan Mbaakaa,  said the programme was aimed at improving the quality of the teaching force in the country, to enhancie its capacity to deliver quality education to the youth.
