FG set to kick-start science expo

The Minister of State for Science, Technology and Innovation (FMSTI), Chief Henry Ikoh, has disclosed that the yearly science expo, would be flag off on the 16th of January.

According to him, that STI has the power to transform the economy in numerous ways.

Ikoh made this assertion during a press briefing to announce the commencement of the 2023 Technology and Innovation Expo with theme ‘Actualising Effective Diversification of Nigerian Economy Through STI.’

“First, it can lead to the creation of new industries and businesses, thereby increasing employment opportunities and boosting economic growth.

“Secondly, it can lead to the development of new products and services, which can be exported to other countries, thereby increasing foreign exchange earnings,” Ikoh added.

He further said that the seventh edition of the expo would include the presentation of the three best young scientists in the country to Mr President for a Presidential Handshake and award of scholarships to any Nigerian university up to PhD level amongst others.

“One of the main highlights of the Expo will be the innovation exhibitions, which will feature cutting-edge technologies and products developed by Nigerian inventors, innovators, researchers and start-ups. The exhibitions will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about the latest innovations and to network with inventors, innovators, researchers, start-ups and investors.

“In addition, the expo will also feature an Investors and Researchers Forum, which will bring together investors, researchers, and government representatives to discuss opportunities for collaboration and funding in STI. This forum will provide a platform for discussing the latest research and technologies and for connecting researchers with potential investors and partners.”

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary FMSTI Mrs. Monilola Udoh said that the science expo, which is the 7th and last for this administration, is an initiative put in place by the Ministry to attract both innovatirs and investors, thus ass value to the economy.

“First edition of the expo which replaced the National Science and Technology (NASTECH) Week was held in 2017 at Eagle Square, Abuja. And after the first edition, technology and innovation expos have been held annually.

“The Technology and Innovation Expo is a Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation exposition programme designed to strategically showcase the use of science for technological inventions, innovations and, majorly, the research and development (R&D) products and results of the FMSTI’s agencies to attract investors,” she stated.
