FG, stakeholders parley, set agenda on cyber security

The federal government and stakeholders in Nigeria and outside the shore has again set an agenda on how to defeat cybercrime and enhance cyber security in the country and the globe at large.

The decision was taken at a three – days national Consultation on the Cybercrimes Legal Framework jointly sponsored by the GLACY+ and OCWAR-C (both EU funded projects) projects in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Justice.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN has described digital transformation as capable of galvanising economic development in a country, saying the emergence of the new technology has expanded opportunities and has also thrown up various challenges globally.

The AGF, who was represented by director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Mohammed Babadoko Abubakar, noted that more than half of the world populations, including Nigeria are active internet users.

“The astronomic increase in the use of technology via internet has led to cybercrime, hence the need for legal framework on cybercrime and cyber security prevention,” he said.

Speaking at the occasion, the vice president, Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria, Umar Sa’ad, lauded Global Action on Cybercrime Extended (GLACY+) and the West African Response on Cyber security and Fight Against Cybercrime (OCWAR-C) collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Justice in convening the crucial event.

Cybercrime challenges, Saad noted, transcends borders and digital landscape.

”As we navigate the complex realms of technology and connectivity, it is paramount that we fortify our legal frameworks to effectively address these malicious acts that undermine the security and trust upon which our digital societies thrive,” he said.

The chairman, African Union Cyber security Group of Experts, Abdul-Hakeem Ajijola, described cyber security as collective responsibility to protect, nurture and spread awareness.

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Pantami, tasked all stakeholders in government, law enforcement agencies, industry, civil society, and academia to join in addressing the multifaceted challenges.
