The federal government has said it will send an aircraft to Libya to bring back Nigerians stranded in the country.
This was made known yesterday in a statement by the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tiwatope Elias-Fatile.
The spokesman said the federal government had been liaising with the Nigerian Mission in Tripoli to ascertain the veracity of a video clip showing some people, including Nigerians being auctioned off in the Arab nation.
He said Nigerian mission officials had met with the Libyan officials over the video, adding that they were assured that the perpetrators of the act would be brought to justice.
He said: “It is apt to add that our mission in Tripoli has been addressing the problems associated with Nigerian migrants in Libya.
“The government is also exploring the feasibility of sending aircraft to evacuate Nigerians who are stranded in Libya.”
The spokesman explained that the mission has been visiting detention camps to identify Nigerians for registration and to issue emergency travelling certificates to them.
The ministry said that the mission in Libya had addressed kidnapping of Nigerians for ransom by foreigners, adding that other cases involving Nigerians who kidnapped their compatriots for ransom in Libya were equally reported to the embassy for intervention.
“The mission had rescued many victims and repatriated some of them to Nigeria, sometimes in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration as well as some NGOs,” he said.
