FG to Kwara varsity: Explore Malete dam for research devt

Minister of Water Resources, Engineer Suleiman Adamu, Thursday tasked authorities of the Kwara state university malete to take full responsibility of the newly upgraded Dam for the university community and explore it for purposes of research development.

This is just as the managing director of the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority, Engineer Saheed Adeniyi Aremu, hinted that the basin may ceed more land to the Kwara state government in Kwara north senatorial district for sugar cane production.

The duo spoke in Malete, Moro local government area of Kwara state at the commissiong of rehabilitated /upgraded project at Malete dam.

Adamu said the university must take the leading role in maintaining the newly commissioned 2 MCM capacity dam which was  an intervention of the federal government through the lower Niger River Basin, Ilorin

He said since the project would serve the population of the state university and malete commuty, it beholds on the university’s authority to take full responsibility in ensuring it maintanance.

Adamu said the project was part of the federal government’s invention to achieving the sustainable development goals by ensuring that every citizen has right to portable water.

Also speaking, managing director of the basin, informed the minister of the request by the state governor, Mallam AbdulRhman AbdulRasaq, asking the basin to ceed more land to Kwara state government in Kwara north for sugar cane production.

A remark, which the minister did not object to saying “you are one family”

While fielding another question from Journalists, on the forthcoming launching on the campaign against open defecation, the minister said the federal government was prepared to end open defecation in Nigeria by 2025.

He said beyond the launching of the campaign against open defecation coming up on 19th December, the ministry will “scale it up ” and take  the campaign to the “nooks and crannies of the country to sensitise Nigerians”.

Also commissioned by the minister was the Sobi water works with a charge to the benefiting communities to protect the source of the water to retain it quality.

He said they must guard against defecation and dumping of waste in the water source.
