FG warns of flash floods in 2020

 

The federal government has warned that the near normal rainfall pattern in the country does not rule out the possibility of isolated flash floods.

The Minister of Aviation said this at the public presentation of the 2020 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction (SRP) and 2019 Climatr Review Bulletin organized by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

The Minister stated that this is due to increasing high intensity rainfall at the peak of the season, especially in areas that are naturally prone to flooding.

He said the earliest cessation date, 26th September 2020 is expected around Katsina and the northern parts of Sokoto while the latest cessation date is expected on the 28th December, 2020 over the Niger-Delta region. 

On the Length of Growing Season, he further said in the year 2020, the length of growing season is expected to span.

The Minister commended the Management and Staff of NiMet for continuously improving the quality of its services, sustaining the momentum of timely presentation of SRP within January every year and winning the confidence of Nigerians. 

“You should put more effort in sustaining this achievement as Nigerians already look forward to this vital product every year,” he said.  

The Director General/ Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Sani Abubakar Mashi said with SRP 2020 prediction, high vigilance is required over the extreme northern fringes of Borno , Yobe, Jigawa and Katsina states .
