The federal government at the weekend declared that it would respect and recognise legitimate aspirations by the citizens provided they were done in good faith, and within the bounds of rationality and without infringing on the rights of others.
President Muhamadu Buhari stated this in a message to the 33rd Convocation ceremony and commissioning of newly completed projects by the University of Ilorin.
Represented by the Executive Secretary, National University’s Commission, Prof. Abdulrasheed Abubakar, the visitor also said the federal government was fully aware of “the numerous challenges confronting the education sector in the country for which he said the government will convey a ministerial summit.”
He said: “I want to admonish you all to be careful in the excessive display of intolerance, rancour, hostility, mutual suspicion and all such capable of causing social unrest in the nation. Those who fan the embers of division must refrain from the unacceptable tendencies, retrace their steps and learn to live together with one another. This government will respect and recognise legitimate aspirations of the citizens but this should be done with good faith, within the bounds of rationality and without infringing on the rights of others. I urge all of you to shun violence as it is only in atmosphere of peace that we can make true progress.”
On the economy, the president said “Nigeria is on the verge of economic recovery from a short and painful recession which will require more productivity for from citizens to consolidate on the gains.”
“Our nation is on the verge of economic recovery, having just exited a short but painful recession. To sustain this recovery and for all of us to experience real change in our living condition, we must be ready to build on the achievements already recorded. All must be involved in productive activities in every area of the economy that we are engaged in. My administration shall continue to drive its economic programmes to consolidate the gains already made in key economic areas such as agriculture, infrastructure development, and sustained war against corruption.”
