FHA inspects FCT commercial, social housing project

Federal Housing Authority (FHA) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Friday inspected the commercial and social housing projects in Zuba and Apo, under the Abuja Mass Housing Project.
While being conducted round the houses at different levels of construction in Zuba and Apo, Chairman of FHA Board of Directors, Senator Lawal Shuaibu, said he was impressed with the level of work being carried out by contractors in the over 500 houses and hoped for their timely completion.
Shuaibu said government had put measures in place to make sure that the houses were completed without further delay and that many Nigerians have already started benefiting from the project since it started, but that contractors will be closely monitored to timely and quality delivery.
“Government is living up to its responsibility of providing houses for people, under the commercial and social housing program of FHA and I am happy that the construction of houses here in Zuba is providing jobs for over 450 people,” he said.
On his part, the Managing Director, FHA, Prof.
Mohammed Al-Amin, said the Authority would start another 550 social housing project in Lugbe, next week, but regretted that Nigerians had poor maintenance culture.
Al-Amin explained that the FHA was embarking on commercial and social housing projects, adding that the mission of FHA “is to make sure that every Nigerian owns a house and that commercial housing is for high income salary earners, while the social housing project is for low income earners.” He said: “Maintenance is key in housing.
Before now, our estates did not have maintenance plan.
The previous management was just building houses and allowing the allottees to take care, but the present management is creating another arm to be in charge of maintenance.
We are about to have another arm of the FHA whose responsibility will be to maintain all facilities, houses and services in every state nationwide.
If we allow residents of federal housing projects to provide and maintain infrastructures in the estates, it will be turn to a haphazard situation and it won’t be fair on them.”
