FHIN tasks FG on food safety

Food Hygiene Initiative of Nigeria (FHIN), a non-governmental organisation based in Abuja, has called on the federal gov¬ernment and the National Assembly to implement laws and policies that would guarantee food safety in the country.
Director General of the organisation, Dr. Nicholas Karimu, made the call at the weekend at the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps Academy, Sauka, during the graduation of 350 of its officers on Food Preservation, Admin¬istration and Safety Practices.
According to him, “we want the government, especially the two chambers of the National Assembly to make laws and policies that can guarantee food safety in the country.
” “The bill seeks among other things the provision for the protection, promotion and fulfillment of the rights of Nigerians to have access to safe food and water.
We, therefore, call on our lawmakers to give the bill a quick hearing and passage,” he said.
Karimu said such laws and policies were long overdue, adding that if implemented, it would go a long way in pro¬moting confidence in foods produced in the country.
He said FHIN should be included in the budget in order to carry out oversight functions for implementation of its bill as it would go a long way in creating jobs and addressing issues of youth restiveness.
He said the training was aimed at educating and training food handlers, operators and administrators of the hygiene and safety practices.
Karimu said the overall goal of food hygiene initiative “is for the achievement of safety prac¬tices to prevent food-related diseases.
” Speaking on behalf of the trainees, Mr. Musa Abdul, thanked the FHIN for the successful completion of their training and promised to be good ambassadors of the organisation any where they found themselves.
