The International Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA), Yobe state branch, in collaboration with the Action Health Incorporation (AHI), has held an awareness campaign on the existence of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law in the state.

According to a statement by the Yobe state director of press, Hajiya Husna Ibrahim, the campaign was organised by the chairperson of FIDA in Yobe, Barr. Altine Ibrahim.

The statement indicated that the importance of the VAPP law was stressed by a member of the Yobe state House of Assembly, Buba Kalallawa, who cleared the air on the law as passed by the state legislature, “but yet to be assented by the governor.”

Similarly, in her remarks, a high court judge, Justice Hadiza Lawan Musa, said “the VAPP law will help curtail cases of violence against persons in the society,” urging lawyers and judicial officers to work hard to ensure that members of the society don’t live in trepidation of violence cases.

In his speech, the Yobe state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Saleh Samanja, said the VAPP law should be implemented in the state.

“We have accepted the VAPP Act and when assented we call for its proper implementation by our courts, so that we can bring an end to all kinds of violence in public and private, especially sexual violence,” he said.
