The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has disclosed plans to train 50 indigent women in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on vocational skills.
Its Regional Vice President, West and North Africa, Mrs Victoria Awomolo, made this known in Abuja at the weekend while briefing newsmen ahead of its forthcoming Africa Regional Congress to be held next month on the theme: “Growth of women and children in Africa beyond rhetorics.”
Awomolo decried the continuos suffering of citizens especially women, stressing that government at all levels must double up efforts to alleviate their suffering.
“We would be training these women on different vocational skills such as bead making, clothes stoning, confectioneries, soap making and making of local drinks, packaging, branding amonsgt others.
“We decided to train and teach them how to make money instead of just giving them money because most times they will spend it on other expenses.
“We are empowering them and ensuring that they are self reliant; we are not just teaching them but providing them with start-up equipments,” she said.
According to Awomolo, empowering the womenfolk would help them support their families in the training of their children, and also impact society positively.
The upcoming Regional Congress will bring together about 400 delegates from Ghana, Liberia Uganda, Kenya and Cameroun.
“Activities lined up for the forthcoming Congress includes thanksgiving services, jumat prayer and keynote address by Professor of Law, University of Nigeria, Prof. Joy Ezeilo.
“It will also feature a plenary session to proffer solutions to challenges of women and children,” she said.
