The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Abuja chapter, has called on victims of rape to break the silence and always speak up to enable prosecution of culprits in order to deter others.
Its Chairperson Rekia Adejo-Andrew
made the call in Abuja during awareness walk to commemorate the 16 days activism for the Elimination of Violence against Women on the theme “Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands against Rape!”
Adejo-Andrew noted that globally, numerous women and children face abuse and marginalisation because of their gender and vulnerability, stating however that they are begining to speak out.
“From politicians to actresses and gymnasts, women of different ages and backgrounds, all facing similar abuses, are speaking out loudly to ensure that these violations no longer go unaddressed,” she said.
she said recent reports from their branches show that there is increase in cases of violence across the country ranging from domestic violence, forceful ejection from home, maltreatment of widows, sexual harassment, coercive use of contraceptives, forced abortion, trafficking in women and forced prostitution.
She said emphasis on this year’s advocacy campaign focuses on rape, adding that the scourge of rape had doubled and it is a great cause for concern for all men and women of good conscience in the country.
She therefore emphasised the need for accountability and change in our society, saying that Nigerians must all work together to make the world a better place.
