Finance minister, Ahmed sets revenue increase agenda

The new Minister of Finance, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed vowed to increase Nigeria’s revenue base.

The minister said this when she met with staff of the ministry after her swearing-in by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday in Abuja.

Mrs Ahmed insisted that she would continue with some of the reforms she started in her first term.

She replaced former finance minister Kemi Adeosun, who resigned due to her NYSC certificate scandal.

She said: “The president brought me back here so that we can continue the implementation of the SIGI and other initiatives that we collectively started. We have to increase revenue.”

In spite of 8 consecutive quarters of growth Nigeria has experienced, she warned that there is need for the country to redouble revenue generation effort to maintain it fragile growth.

“As you know our our nation is facing fiscal crisis. Our revenue have grown but it is still 55 per cent short of projection,” she added.

She, therefore urged the ministry’s staff to redouble their effort in the good work in her first tenure.

“I want to urge you that the good work you’ve done in the past should be redoubled because the task is now double.

The finance minister is also to oversee the ministry of budget and national planning.
