Fire guts Bodija plank market, destroys N200m property


Property worth about N200 million were on Monday night destroyed during a midnight inferno at the Bodija plank market axis of the Bodija International market in Ibadan.


It was learnt that the fire incident affected some of the plank shops at the Zone 7 axis of the Bodija plank market, Monday night.


The plank sellers at the market have however said they had lost over two hundred million naira as a result of the incident. 


According to the plank traders, as at present, no one could trace the source of the mysterious fire that gutted the market at that late hour of the day which razed about 18 plank shops and  affected 40 traders.


Speaking Tuesday about the fire incident, the Chairman of Zone 7 of the plank market, Alhaji Daud Owoyemi Ogunrin, the news of the fire outbreak came to him as a shock at about some minutes past 8pm during which property worth over N200million were destroyed. 


“I was informed some minutes after 8 pm yesterday that our shops are on fire. We came here and everything have been destroyed. We cannot say the cause of the incident, but eighteen shops have been destroyed”, he said. 


Alhaji Ogunrin added, ” we have more than forty people who have property here. We are beging God to replenish us. .We are calling on well spirited Nigerians and the government to assist us. We do not know where to start.”
