Flight disruptions imminent as Jet A1 scarcity looms

The ugly situation of flight disruptions may soon resurface in the country. This is because air tickets on the domestic routes are likely to go up following the inability of major aviation fuel, Jet A1, marketers are having difficulties loading the commodity at the Tin Can port in Lagos as importers are said to have increased the price.

The situation will further result in flight delays, cancellations and sometimes outright disruptions as operators will have to either reschedule their flight in line with the Jet A1 availability or request passengers to make inquiries before making plans for their flight.

Our correspondent gathered that in the last two days, there has been no loading at the terminals at the Tin Can port as marketers and their clients are at odds due to sudden price increase of the fuel which constitutes more than 40 per cent of an airline operating cost.

At present, a one-way ticket on the domestic flight costs between N70, 000 and N80, 000 for economy class while a business class goes for between N120, 000 and 150, 000 depending on prevailing market situations and demands.

Alex Nwuba, a foremost aviation analyst and President, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, told our correspondent on the phone that the next few days will definitely witness some crisis in the industry.
