Flood: Gov Bello orders completion of ongoing Niger roads, bridges

Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger state has directed the completion of all ongoing roads, bridges and culvert projects connecting riverine communities across the state before the commencement of the raining season.

The governor also directed contractors handling various township road projects to speed up works and ensure their completion before the rain starts,

He gave the directive during inspection of on-going Kwamba -Maje road projects in Suleja local government area of the state, directing the state Commissioner of Finance to make funds available to the contractors handling the projects.

He said, “Although the five-kilometer Maje-Kwamba project is a federal road, the people of the state are the first beneficiaries. Therefore, the bad condition of the road has been a source of concern to the state government. Government decided to fix the road to reduce difficulty faced by road users and allow free flow of traffic.”

The governor, who also inspected the ongoing construction work on a 100-meter bridge linking about 30 villages , expressed dissatisfaction over the delay in completing the project, which contract was awarded since 2017.

He said, “This contract for the construction of the bridge was awarded in 2017 following outcry from these communities that they have been cut off from township due to the absence of a bridge which had made the movement of Agricultural produce to the markets and other commercial activities a nightmare.”
