Flood kills 5, destroys hectares of rice farm in Jigawa

At least five people have been killed while hectares of rice farm across Miga local government area of Jigawa state have been destroyed.

Speaking to our reporter on the incident in Miga Wednesday, the council chairman, Muhammed Abubakar Agofa, said apart from the loss of life and thousands of houses destroyed by flood, scores of people were injured.

“A house collapsed and killed a small child, injured an old woman in this town; so they are among the dead,” the chairman said.

According to him, thousands of residents have taken refuge with their relations in the town, adding that “my people are badly in need of assistance from the relevant authorities so that their lives can be resuscitated.”

“The residents of Miga town lost their houses and their properties to flooding. Those whose houses were not affected are being threatened because nobody sleeps in the night. We remain awake throughout the night.

“Although we had provided the victims with relief materials such as garri, kulikuli, sugar and empty bags for embankment, we still need assistance from the state and federal governments,” he stressed.

The chairman said the council had provided 10 canoes to areas surrounded by water, saying: “We got some from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) while the council bought others. At the moment, we have not gotten assistance from any organisation or individuals yet.”
