Flood sweeps away 200 bodies in Niger graveyard 

Ravaging flood has reportedly washed away 200 bodies from a graveyard in Mariga Town in Mariga local government area of Niger state. 

It was learnt that the popular River Mariga that linked the area with Rafi local government area overflows its banks towards Mariga where the graveyard is situated.

Villagers were said to have discovered the bizarre development late on Tuesday as already buried dead bodies were floating on the River

A resident of the area Mohammed Aliyu told journalists that immediately after it was discovered,  the community leaders informed the authorities and mobilized for the recovery of the already buried bodies.

“The government officials promptly responded and as of this afternoon (yesterday) about 200 bodies were recovered, they are still struggling to get access to the area,” he said.

The Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed the incident to the media in Minna 

He said, “It is true that River Mariga overflows its banks and washed away parts of the grave located around the area”.

Asked whether dead bodies were unearthed by the flood, he said, “I visited there with the commissioner of works and it is true that dead bodies were washed away but I can not give you the number of the bodies because the recovery is still ongoing.”
