Flood sweeps away 6-year-old pupil

A rampaging flood Monday washed away a six-year-old boy in Uselu Shell, in Egor local government area of Edo state.
The incident reportedly occurred when the victim who was simply identified as Segun fell into a flooded drainage on the Benin Ugbowo-Lagos highway during Monday’s downpour.
It was learnt that the six-yearold was being taken home by his mother after the close of work when he suddenly slipped and fell into the gutter on the service lane of the road.
Mother of the victim who identified herself as Latifa said: “I held him (victim) by the hand but he moved back and fell.” Latifa explained that as she attempted to save the boy’s life; with the other child strapped to her back, she almost fell into the drainage adding that she was rescued by a good Samaritan.
A failed search for the boy after several hours however sparked off protest by youths in the area yesterday.
The protesters claimed that several lives were in the past lost in similar circumstances in the drainages.
They alleged that the gutters were not properly constructed.
The protester grounded free flow of traffic at the ever-busy expressway for several hours while the demonstration lasted.
All efforts to get the comment of the Nigerian Police on the tragedy were unsuccessful.
Its spokesman, DSP, Chidi Nwabuzor, could not be reached for comments.
