Former minister wants meritocracy enshrined in constitution

Former Minister of Women Affairs, Chief Mrs Josephine Anenih has said that part of the agenda of women to the National Conference holding in Abuja would include gender issues that have agitated the minds of women for a long time specific reference to merit.
Mrs Anenih stated that full participation of women in the development of the country has become necessary in view of globalisation of gender issues which Nigeria is a signatory to.
She stated that at the end of the conference, women would recommend a constitution that is equitable to all not only in letters but also in spirit noting that all claims of non discrimination against any group in the present constitution is merely lip service and not in practice.
According to the former minister, equality between men and women in the constitution implies meritocracy which emphasized that where a woman deserves an appointment in view of her qualification or performance, she should be considered and not discriminated against on the basis of sex.
The former minister stated that women at the conference would be canvassing for the passage of the bill on Complete Eradication of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) at the National Assembly stating.
She noted that Nigeria was already a signatory to it at the international level and wondered why some states in the country is foot dragging in domesticating the law the country has already accepted its conditions.
