FOU foils smuggling activities, recovers N1.6bn DPV

Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federation Operations Unit (FOU)) anti-smuggling operation have intercepted various contraband with Duty Paid Value (DPU) worth of One Billion, Six Hundred and Eleven Million, One Hundred and Seventy Seven Thousand Naira, Six Hundred and Sixty One Naira, Fifty Kobo (N1,618,177,661.50) from January 1- 31, 2018.
The seizures were made between January 1 to 31, 2018.
According to the Controller of FOU, Mohammed Ubah smugglers would continue to be frustrated because they were obstructing the growth of the nation’s economy.
The seized items include 31 assorted vehicles, 8,400 bags of foreign parboiled rice in 14 trailers, 1,652 cartoons of frozen poultry products, 835 Jerrycans of vegetable oil, 10 sacks bag of Indian hemp, 2,208 pieces of used tyres and159 bales of used clothing among others.
Also in the custody of the FOU were 4 Rolls Royce, 1 Porche Panamera, 1 Jaguar, 1 Bentley, 2 Lexus, Jeep, 2 G WAGON, 1 Toyota Land Cruiser, 5 Toyota Corolla, 7 Mercedes Benz among other 2017 model cars.
The Controller said: “These 31 assorted vehicles alone have a duty paid value of One Billion Four Hundred and Twenty Nine Million, Nine Hundred and Fifty Three Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty One Naira, Fifty Kobo (N1,429, 953, 941, 50) only.”
He explained that some of the vehicles were evacuated along Ijebu Ode Expressway while others were seized at various raid at Parkview estate, VI, Banana Island, Alhaji Bankole Crescent Ikeja and Tola Adewunmi Street Maryland.
“We urge the owners of these vehicles to come forward with valid customs clearance documents otherwise they will be liable to seizure and subsequent forfeiture t the federal government in line with laws of the land.
“For avoidance of doubt, our action is line with provisions of sections of 147 of customs and excise management act (CEMA) Cap 45, Laws Of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 (power to search premises), Section 158 of CEMA, Cap 45 Laws of Federation of Nigeria (power to patrol freely.
