Foundation blames ethnic crisis on loss of respect for human life

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate the International Day for Peace, an Abuja based non-governmental organisation, Helpline Foundation for the Needy, has blamed the loss of respect for human life for ethic crisis in parts of the country.

President of the Foundation, Dr. Jumai Ahmadu, stated this while addressing a press conference to mark this year’s International Day for Peace, Monday in Abuja.
According to her, “Pockets of ethic crisis in some parts of the country was as a result of lost values, and lack of respect for human lives and dignity.”

The Foundation’s president, who identified peace as panacea for economic growth and development, maintained that there was need for Nigerians to retrace their steps and return to the culture of respect for life.
Speaking on this year’s theme: Shaping Peace Together, she said peaceful coexistence was everybody’s business and tasked government at all levels to do more to meet the yearning and aspirations of the people as well as build a more inclusive society with respect for human rights.

“This year, it has been clearer than ever before that we are not each other’s enemies, rather, our common enemy is a tireless virus coronavirus (COVID-19) that threatens our health and way of life. “The COVID-19 has thrown our world into turmoil and forcibly reminded us that what happens in one part of the planet can impact on others elsewhere,” Ahmadu stated.

She, therefore, called on all warring communities to lay down their weapons and focus on the battle against this unprecedented global pandemic, noting that cooperation was also needed to win the fight against the worst public health crisis in recent times.

The International Day for Peace is devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.
It was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly and two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.
