Free legal services: ‘We’ve received 500,000 cases’

The administrator, Public Defenders Office (PDO) in Kano, Mrs Rotkang H. Kyunni, has said that the office had made “considerable headway in offering free legal services to the less-privileged in Kano.”

She also said it had so far received about 500, 000 cases that entailed legal intervention in various aspects.

Speaking at a one-day sensitisation and awareness programme/legal clinic at Sheka Community in Kumbotso local government area on Friday, Kyunni said offering such free legal services “has become imperative for the less-privileged to be supported in cases where their respective individual rights were trampled upon with impunity.”

She said the office had been inspired into taking the gauntlet in presiding over litigations that bordered on cases of murder and other related offences.

According to her, family disputes and the disputes involving neighbours within a community ware also the concern of the Public Defenders’ Office and that fighting for the rights of the downtrodden would assist in overcoming their disturbing predicaments.

“We are here today to create awareness in this community like we did in other local communities. Our major area of concern is women’s active participation in this programme for them to comprehend the nitty gritty of accessing free legal services. With this awareness, we are confident of the fact that people living in this community would stand to benefit from this important programme,” she said.
