Fresh communal clash erupts in Kogi, 20 feared dead, houses razed

At least 20 people have reportedly died in the early hours of Thursday after a renewed clash between Igburra and Bassa Kwomu communities in the  eastern senatorial district of Kogi  state.

Already, the Police Public Relation Officer of the state police command William Aya has confirmed the death of one person in the clash.

According to him: “Unknown corpse was discovered after a detachment of officers was drafted to the area in response to reported clashes between the two communities.

A community leader in Sheria Elder Gberegu said Igburra had in the early hours of Thursday attacked Bassa kwomu community where about 20 people lost their lives while several houses were razed, inspite of earlier call for cease fire on  January 8, 2019.

“Imagine the bridge linking Oguma and Sheria was completely destroyed by Igbirra militias while Sheria village has been deserted for fear of further attack.” he said .

However, Police Spokeman in the state said the command had received a report of clashes in the area and responded by drafting officers from the state anti-riot squad and conventional police to the areas where they found one unknown corpse which was evacuated immediately while the situation was brought under control.

He stated that the state police commissioner, Hakeem Busari, has also ordered more officers to be drafted to the area to complement the efforts of those already on ground.
