How FRSC marked World Cycling Day

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in collaboration with the Ogun state Cycling Federation has marked the 2018 United Nations Worlds’ Cycling Day in Ogun state, with the theme “cycling for fitness.”
The activities commemorating the event commenced with the FRSC Sector Commander, Commander Clement Oladele, addressing FRSC personnel on parade with detachment of cyclists from the Ogun State Sports Council, after which in a procession proceeded to the NTA Abeokuta Headquarters where the riders were received by the Management of NTA.
The cyclists and the FRSC personnel were, thereafter proceeded to Alaba Lawson International School to encourage the students on Cycling Fitness and Youth Safety Education.
The 2018 World Cycling Day commemoration terminated at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, where the procession was received by the Ogun State Honourable Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Afolabi Afuape, where he encouraged stakeholders to advance the use of bicycles as a means of fostering sustainable development which is in tandem with other UN Declarations such as the Sustainable Development Goals and the World Urban Agenda.
The FRSC Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Clement Oladele noted that the event was further to realising the FRSC’s grand strategy of placing Nigerian highways within the league of global safest roads, as the world’s twenty safest highways all have robust cycling policies and practices.
The Sector Commander commended the Ogun state government’s urban renewal programme but solicited for provision of cycling paths in the ongoing road construction projects by the state government, to accommodate cyclists and encourage cycling in the state.
The Sector Commander stated further that “frequent cycling, apart from the health benefits, promotes longevity, reduces traffic congestion, and will more importantly make motorists appreciate and respect fellow cyclists’ right of way, as cycling is not a condition of poverty, but a veritable platform for exercising the body, and reducing harmful emissions from motorised form of transportation which in the end can aid the country attain the goal of placing Nigeria within the league of global safest highways.”
