Fuel subsidy: Organised Labour suspends planned nationwide strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have decided to suspend the impending strike scheduled to commence on Wednesday.

The strike was intended to protest the removal of the petrol subsidy.

The decision to suspend the strike was reached after a productive meeting between the leaders of the labour unions and representatives of the federal government. The two parties have agreed to reconvene on June 19 to continue negotiations.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed the agreement in a communique at the end of the meeting between organised labour and the federal government.

According to the speaker, the federal government, the TUC and the NLC are to establish a joint committee to review the proposal for any wage increase and a framework and timeline for implementation.

During the meeting, it was agreed upon that a joint committee would be established to thoroughly review the proposal for wage increase or award, ensuring a well-defined framework and timeline for implementation.

Furthermore, the resolution includes a plan to assess and potentially modify the World Bank-funded cash transfer scheme, with a specific focus on incorporating low-income earners into the program. Additionally, the federal government and labour unions have committed to reviving the CNG conversion program, which was previously agreed upon in 2021. Detailed implementation and timing will be worked out.

Other key areas of discussion involved addressing challenges within the education sector, proposing effective solutions, and establishing a framework for the completion of refinery rehabilitation.

The federal government has also been tasked with devising a comprehensive framework for road maintenance and the expansion of rail networks across the nation.

This development brings temporary relief as both the labour unions and the federal government continue their dialogue to find a lasting resolution to the issues at hand.

Blueprint had reported that the National Industrial Court (NIC) in Abuja had halted the organised from going ahead with their planned strike to protest the unilateral removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government.
